Connect Cucumber!
Instructions to play (very similar to Connect 4 but slightly different!)
This game is played between 2 - 3 players.
Each have 5 cucumber ends, choosing between light green, dark green and cut cucumber ends. The aim of connect cumber is to get three of your cucumber ends in a row, column or diagonal sequences.
If a player gets their three in a row, they win!
P.S If one player drops a cucumber when placing it on a hook, this counts as a turn! So watch out!
This artwork functions as a game and hook hanging device.
These cucumbers are made to be handled and if you feel like it put it on the ends of your fingertips.
They are designed for play, experimentation and creating forms.
This work speaks to the way vegetables are prepared, and the ends of cucumbers became an obsession of mine whilst working in food services in Aged Care. I was cutting up lots of cucumbers for salads to feed over 100 residents and before throwing them in the bin, I began to recognise their beauty of each cucumber end, and wanted to make something that would emulate their beauty in an uncanny way.
The work also draws upon the problems food waste impacts on the environment, both locally and globally. I hope with this artwork to encourage the people at home, in aged care/ residential/health facilities, and restaurants and food chains to recognise the impacts of food waste and to adopt composting strategies and greener ways to look after every bit of food waste that is prepared, chopped, tossed, sliced, cooked and half eaten.
